AN ASTONISHING MOMENT
Totality. Nearly four minutes of clockwork as the Moon completely covers the sun during the 8 April 2024 eclipse. At the start a cheer went up from all the people in the Ohio rest area where we spent nearly eight hours. Peace and love and the sky above, as people of all ages and politics came together for peace and love and the sky above. Twilight fell upon the land: street lights came on; a Robin stopped hunting worms and began singing his 5 a.m. plaintive song; Trout Lily and other wildflowers closed up, responding to the sudden darkness; truckers passing by blared their horns in celebration. Human joy abounding.
The white streamers in the corona surrounding the sun are plasma–and are actually hundreds of times hotter than the sun’s surface at ONE MILLION °C! Intricate and beautiful, they change over time. It is this hot plasma that creates the memorable beauty of the eclipse.
LOCATION: Space. Viewed from a northbound rest area along I-75 south of Findlay, Ohio, USA
