FREEDOM OF THE WILD
For many of us, nature is a source of endless mystery, a place to think about our place in the world, and a place to explore living creatures and their environment. This is why I return again and again over the years to Shi Shi Beach on the Olympic Peninsula. It is a vast stretch of wild shoreline that has brought me some of my favorite encounters with nature: a Bald Eagle stealing a dead gull from a Peregrine Falcon; colorful little nudibranchs living in the tide pools of Point of Arches; a Big Skate washed up dead on a sandy beach; watching a Sunflower Star three feet in diameter hunting in sandy-bottomed shallows; and seeing millions of molted exoskeletons of Dungeness Crabs washed up in the surf. Every time we go to Shi Shi, it is an amazing and unique experience.
This photograph of a man walking captures the immensity of the experience and the sense of wonder that accompanies any walk along this wild shore.
