VENERABLE
About 35 years ago, an Amish community grew in central Michigan, with members buying up old and worn-out farms in proximity to each other. I remember a man telling my mother that they were about to see the rural landscape once again come alive as the tired farmland was fertilized, one-room schools were established, and buggies began traveling the old sand roads. It was a renaissance: vegetable stands went up; farmers began selling maple syrup and honey and rustic furniture. Children once again helped out every day on the farms. It was like stepping back 150 years.
This huge barn is now owned by an Amish family, who have dairy cows and a sawmill. If it had been new, there would have been a community barn raising and the structure would have been painted white. But this was the original color, and so it remains. What I love about this picture is the sculptural quality of the rooflines and the way the roofs blend with the sky and the texture of the falling snowflakes.
