GINGERBREAD GOTHIC
Artist Grand Wood created his masterpiece, American Gothic, nearly a century ago, portraying stern-faced farming couple with the man holding a pitchfork. He was portraying American life in Iowa, where he lived. Some read the painting as satire, but I read it as a tribute to the American values of hard work and sacrifice, values I grew up with.
While traveling through Iowa we came upon the small town of Rockford, Iowa, which bills itself as “The Home of Devonian Fossils,” and indeed we enjoyed hunting for brachiopods nearby. But I also found this wonderful old gothic hose, created in the Gothic Revival Style, which captured something of the spirit of America Gothic. It was abandoned, perhaps temporarily, but I loved the lines and feeling of the house.
