The world’s intricate and inherent beauty is a gift to humanity, inspiring both science and art. When I took this picture I was in Redwood National Park, where 300 foot Coastal Redwoods rise dramatically into the misty sky. It is a place of hushed reverence, a natural cathedral. But the magnificence continues on a small scale beneath the immense trees: this prismatic display is achingly beautiful, and it is simply a spider’s web backlit by the low winter sun. The light goes through and around the strands, creating stunning prisms of light in what humans perceive as an abstract pattern.
