WINTER LAUNDRY
During a heavy March snowfall I ventured out on the sand roads near my home, looking for whatever. This long line of laundry, supposedly drying in the cold snow, caught my eye. It was on an Amish farm, where the women dry their garments and towels and sheets outdoors, often on Mondays but sometimes stretching into other days, depending upon the weather. This long line is a new innovation in the innovation-resistant Amish community; it is attached to a pulley system whereby the farm wife or her daughters can stand under the protection of the porch, or even inside an open window, while attaching or detaching laundry from the line.
In this photograph you can see the texture of the falling snow on the laundry, which seems suspended between heaven and earth.
